LOVE&SPACE
“Tell me, what is the shape of love?”
I’m Adeeshtra.
I grew up in Durban, South Africa, where I faced colorism and homophobia for being dark and queer growing up. While isolating and lonely, they became central to my journey into design and art, shaping the way I see and create.
My practice is guided by what I long to see more of in the world: beautiful dark skin, queerness, softness, femininity, dreams and love. It took a while for me to accept these elements of myself but now I champion it. In both my architecture and art, I work with these themes as acts of care, visibility, and resistance—towards a browner, lovelier world.
As an architect, my focus lies in contemporary Afrocentricity and Sustainability. My designs are not just buildings, but reflect space as a deeper measure of what the future could be- one of deep cultural and environmental sustenance. As an artist, I create symbolic paintings that holds space and dreams of love and tenderness that reflects my brown queer life.
I lead with my heart, and it bleeds into what I create.
